Largest Federation of Filipino American Organizations Stands in Support of the ABS-CBN Corporation

Washington, D.C. (July 14, 2020) — The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) stands in strong support of ABS-CBN and its 11,000 workers whose jobs are in jeopardy as a result of the non-renewal of its congressional franchise.

Last Friday, the committee on franchises in the Philippine House of Representatives voted 70-11 to reject ABS-CBN’s application for a new 25-year renewal of its franchise. This decision silences the country’s top broadcaster and forces them to shut down some of its business operations.

Particularly, amidst the current global pandemic, their global television network, The Filipino Channel (TFC), ABS-CBN has been a vital source of news for the Filipino American community and to Filipinos worldwide.  It has served as a connection to their Filipino heritage through programming that exemplifies the facets of Filipino culture.

“The removal of ABS-CBN robs the Filipino people, and their global diaspora, of an important source of news and entertainment, and aims to silence a trusted voice in the global media landscape,” stated NaFFAA National Chair and President Brendan Flores.

Since NaFFAA’s inception, ABS-CBN has been a steadfast and stalwart collaborative partner in NaFFAA’s endeavor to empower and engage millions of Filipino Americans.  Operating in “service of the Filipino”, they have helped further NaFFAA’s mission in their support of programs such as the Biennial National Empowerment Conference, TFCUniversity (TFCU), and Kollective Hustle.
